It may sound strange today, but there once was a time when being anti-fascist was something all Americans could support.(Except, of course, for the Nazi sympathizers.) If you long for those thrilling days of yesteryear, A Call to Spy has you covered. This fact-based World War II espionage drama focuses on not one or two but three intrepid participants in a fledgling British spy service that recruited women for a “club unlike any other,” on the theory that women agents would be more inconspicuous than men.

Sarah Megan Thomas is a filmmaker dedicated to telling women’s stories, especially in cinema genres where they’ve been left out of the canon. Thomas wrote, produced and stars in her latest film, A Call To Spy, a truth-based narrative about women in the Special Operations Executive (SOE), a secret British intelligence organization that embedded spies in occupied France during WWII. The film focuses on three women who gathered intelligence essential to the defeat of Germany. Their gripping story is important. So are Thomas’ comments about how the female perspective differs and how to get more of it on screen.

IFC Films has acquired the North American rights to A Call to Spy, the feature directorial debut of Academy Award-nominated documentary producer Lydia Dean Pilcher, which centers on the courageous unsung female spies who served in World War II. IFC is planning an autumn release.

Forced to consider new avenues for espionage after the Nazis invade France, Sir Winston Churchill created a covert brigade of female spies lead by American expatriate Virginia Hall and Muslim pacifist Noor Inayat Khan who formed a sisterhood while entangled in dangerous missions to help stop Hitler.
