Running in an Omicron-induced virtual edition from 27 January to 6 February, the independent heart that lies at the core of the Slamdance Film Festival is perhaps nowhere more brazen in its passion for cinema that otherwise falls off the mainstream radar than their lovingly curated shorts program. While there are too many women-directed shorts to mention here, across fiction, animation and documentary shorts some of the festival’s stand-outs warrant particular mention in this far-too-brief overview.

MIU MIU WOMEN’S TALES – Review by Marilyn Ferdinand

For roughly the past decade, Italian high-fashion brand Miu Miu, a subsidiary of Prada, has been commissioning and releasing short films from some of the world’s most renowned women directors. As long as the films include Miu Miu fashions and accessories, the directors have been free to express their own creative impulses and personalities. Within the series, film fans will recognize signature flourishes along with great invention.

Feature films may draw the buzz at film festivals, but shorts are where plenty of gems that are just awaiting for an audience to find them reside. That is certainly true of the Toronto International Film Festival, which even in this pandemic-impacted year, has mounted an impressive slate of five shorts programs. These three, all made by women, are part of TIFF’s Shorts 5 program, described as “journey of discovery.” They certainly are that.
