Cannily realizing that space creature features are a known cinematic quantity these days, writers Oleg Malovichko and Andrei Zolotarev craft a taut and twisty film that frequently zigs when you expect it to zag. Even if they don’t quite nail the landing every time, you have to appreciate the filmmakers’ efforts to flip the script on this familiar subgenre.

There is a creepy pall over everything in Sputnik. It has an intentional sparseness and frigidity that might put off viewers were it not for the strong and complex female character at its center. She’s brainy, fearlessness, and compassionate. With Sputnik, you might come for the alien, but you’ll stay for the heroine.
