Sundance Film Festival featured many films directed by black women. Each film had a different theme and inspiration. Each of the filmmakers had a different point of entry into filmmaking. Some went to film school others went out on a whim, but each brought a strong personal vision and compelling story to the screen, showing that the black experience is not monolithic, but very global. That’s the beauty of filmmaking.

I know that covering the festival from Toronto is not the same as being in Park City, Utah, but it is great to know that my mission has still been accomplished, more or less. After all, does it really matter where we are? We are still close to what drives the ever-expanding cinematic universe – cinema itself, and storytelling, and the ability to see the movies in any part of the world.

I know many people say it’s become too commercialized, but I can still feel the joy and enthusiasm of the filmmakers, whether it’s their first or the tenth time with a film in competition. At its heart, Sundance is still about giving voice to new talent, or giving a new opportunity to a talent that has been dormant too long, due to financial or creative challenges.

I saw only films directed by women this year, and my focus was on films from the Latinx community, as well as World films from diverse cultures, and African-American filmmakers. How absolutely delightful that I found nearly all of the movies I saw to be well-crafted, compelling, and unique, but a number of them were to be more widely celebrated because they’d gained distribution or won awards, or both.
