The Alliance of Women Film Journalists and Whistler Film Festival are proud to announce the winners of the AWFJ EDA Awards for Best Female-Directed Feature and Best Female-Directed Short at Whistler Film Festival 2024. The EDA Award winners were announced at the Whistler Film Festival awards ceremony on Sunday, December 8, 2024. This is the twelfth consecutive year of the partnership between AWFJ and WFF to recognize and honor the work of female filmmakers whose work is screened at the festival. This year AWFJ EDA Awards were presented in two categories: Best Female-Directed Feature and Best Female-Directed Short. WFF nominated five feature length films and six short films for consideration by AWFJ’s jurors, all of whom are members of the Alliance of Women Film Journalists.

The cesspool of catfishing and scamming that is the internet can sometimes actually lead to a transformative and beautiful relationship. Just ask writer/director Tracie Laymon. It is the pitch perfect balance of sweet, bittersweet, and heartbreaking that will grab hold of viewers who watch her semi-autobiographical narrative feature Bob Trevino Likes It. It is about chosen family’s power to heal longstanding trauma, and knowing going into the film it’s inspired by a true story will only make the experience more poignant. In searching the internet for her estranged father, Laymon found a man with the same name, and contacting him sparked the beginning of a deep friendship that helped heal them both.
