American Soldiers Who Say Killing is Wrong

Soldiers of Conscience profiles eight American soldiers, four of whom believe that killing is wrong and refuse to kill, and four of whom believe that killing in times and under the conditions of warfare is necessary and acceptable. This well-balanced documentary shows that most combat personnel grapple with the morality of killing, and that whether decide to kill or refuse to do so, the issue has lasting effects on their lives, outlooks and future behavior.

Would You Pull The Trigger?

You may not ever have to face the decision of whether or not to point a gun at another human being and pull the trigger, or release a bomb that will kill hundreds or thousands of people, but military men and women who are sent into combat are forced to grapple with that question at some point during their service. This documentary, narrated by Peter Coyote, looks at the responses of eight combat veterans — including a West Point grad, drill sergeant, Abu Gharaib interrogator and low ranking reservist, among them — to the moral dilemma about taking human life. For these soldiers, the question is a practical rather than philosophical one, but the film provokes viewers to consider both sides of the issue and, basically, decide what they would do.

Filmmakers Gary Weimberg and Catherine Ryan present a balanced and well-researched documentary that delves into what is an essential and troubling moral dilemma. Warfare and killing are inseparable. The question is whether or not soldiers — and you — accept them as soul mates. This important film will help all of us thing that one through.
