Girls will be Girls is Indian director Shuchi Talati’s narrative feature about Mira (Preeti Panigrahi), a smart but naive teenage girl who is trying to figure out what being a woman is all about. Mira is the best student in her coed high school and, as such, is given the position of prefect, which puts her in charge of her peers adherence to school rules regarding the polite distance to be kept between girls and boys, the length of girls’ skirts, and other such matters. Constant demands are made of her by the school’s female principal who sees Mira as perfect, but suspects that she isn’t. Mira is the first female to be named prefect, and the other students resent her influence or court her for it. Among them is Sri (Kesav Binoy Kiron), an engaging and handsome chap who woos Mira’s friendship, arousing her already hormonally-driven curiosity about boys and sex. The two of them turn to sex manuals for lessons in how to ‘do it’– with the understanding that they will find a place to ‘do it’ despite everyone’s constant surveillance of Mira. Mira lives with her single mom, Anila (Kani Kusruti), a free-spirited woman not past her prime who is strict with her daughter but nonetheless shunned by the more conservatively conventional mothers at her daughter’s elite school. Even Anila’s fashion transition from sari to slacks causes caustic comments and disapproving glances. Mira inevitably introduces Sri to her Mom, and the palpable attraction between Anil and the boy exacerbates the tremendous turmoil in the emotional life of this ‘everygirl’ who is trying to understand what it means to become a woman. There’s good story aplenty here and the performances are excellent  — and, although the film is Indian in origin and reflects Indian culture, Girls will be Girls is universally relatable.
