The Alliance of Women Film Journalists is pleased to announce the nominees for the 2020 AWFJ EDA Awards. In our 14th annual awards season, we present EDA Awards in 25 categories divided into three sections, the BEST OF AWARDS, FEMALE FOCUS AWARDS AND EDA SPECIAL MENTION AWARDS. Nominees in each category are determined by AWFJ members who submit nominating ballots. There are currently 92 voting AWFJ members. The full membership list is accessible here.     • All indie female writers and directors who normalized abortion as a vital element in the cultural conversation in films such as SAINT FRANCES, NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS, SISTER OF THE GROOM, ONCE UPON A RIVER, THE GLORIAS and others.

    • Emerald Fennell for creating a film that forces empathy to put an end to the toxic sexist rape culture pervasive through modern history.

    • Sophia Loren for a brilliant comeback at age 86 in THE LIFE AHEAD, the latest in her record-setting career. Loren won a Best Actress Oscar in 1962 for TWO WOMEN and was the first actor to win for a foreign language movie. She was also nominated in 1965 for MARRIAGE ITALIAN STYLE. If she’s nominated in 2021, it will be a 56-year span between her two most recent nominations – the current record is held by Henry Fonda, who had a 41-year gap between nominations.

A NOTE ABOUT THE SELECTION OF AWFJ’s 2020 EDA AWARD NOMINEES:

This year marks the 14th edition of AWFJ’s annual EDA Awards, and it has been a peculiarly topsy turvey year for the cinema community and for all of us who are part of it. Despite disruption pf film production and distribution due to pandemic pandemonium, 2020 has seen the release of an unusually high number of superb femme-helmed and femme-centric films. Throughout the year, AWFJ has recognized and promoted the pick of the crop in our ongoing Movie of the Week feature. And we are both proud and gratified that our 2020 EDA Awards nominees reflect AWFJ’s collective feminist spirit and perspective.

AWFJ’s annual EDA Awards always honor the year’s best regardless of gender, but we are thrilled that in 2020 three female-directed films have emerged as our most nominated films. Even better, two of these and several other multi-nominated films tell stories centering on strong and complex female characters from diverse backgrounds. In the lead is Chloe Zhoe’s NOMADLAND, garnering nine EDA nominations for Best Film, Best Director, Best Woman Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Woman Screenwriter and Best Editing for Chloe Zhao; Best Cinematography; and Best Actress, Grand Dame Award, and Most Daring Performance Award for Frances McDormand. Next, Regina King’s highly regarded ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI is honored with eight nominations in the “Best Of,” “Female Focus,” and “EDA Special Mention” categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, Best Ensemble, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Woman Director. And, third is Emerald Fennell’s PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN has six nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Woman Director, and Best Woman Screenwriter. Additionally, Fennell is nominated for this year’s Outstanding Achievement Award, along with Sophia Loren for her brilliant comeback and all of the Female Film Festival Directors who successfully transitioned from live to online events.

ABOUT THE EDA AWARDS: The AWFJ presents EDA Awards to honor women’s achievements in front of and behind the cameras. The EDAs are named in honor of AWFJ founder Jennifer Merin’s mother, Eda Reiss Merin, a stage, film and screen actress whose career spanned more than 60 years. A dedicated foot soldier in the industry, Eda was one of the founders of AFTRA and a long-standing member of AMPAS.
