Olivia Munn, Yara Shahidi and Chrissy Metz to be lauded at Girl Up’s first annual #GirlHero Awards
Olivia Munn, Yara Shahidi and Chrissy Metz will be honored at Girl Up’s first annual #GirlHero Awards, hosted by Kristen Bell, Scarlett Johansson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Gabrielle Union, Katy Perry, Renee Zellweger and Tony Goldwyn.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the awards luncheon, which will celebrate those advocating for gender equality, is for Oct. 14 at the SLS Hotel in Los Angeles. Hosted by “High School Musical” alumna Monique Coleman and veteran TV personality Shaun Robinson, the event will highlight both its Hollywood allies and other Girl Up leaders fighting for change.
Girl Up started as an initiative of the United Nations Foundation with the goal of preparing young girls for leadership positions in the movement toward gender equality, with around 40,000 participants working at locations in more than 100 countries.
As previously reported, Munn recently made headlines when she lobbied for the removal of a scene from her current film project “The Predator” after she learned that the actor featured opposite her in the scene was a registered sex offender. Also as previously reported, she has been lauded for speaking out against filmmaker Brett Ratner about the sexual misconduct she had to contend with one on his projects. The University of Oklahoma graduate received in spring the inaugural Voice for Justice Award for her leadership and activism against sexual harassment in the workplace at OU’s Women’s and Gender Studies Board of Advocates fourth annual Voices for Change gala.
Shahidi, star of the TV show “Grown-ish,” is known for her own education initiatives like Yara’s Club and Eighteenx18, which aim to reach a diverse crowd of young students and voters, and “This Is Us” star Metz has been an outspoken advocate for body positivity.
