Oscar-nominated performer Carey Mulligan will star in “Promising Young Woman,” a timely thriller to be helmed by “Killing Eve” showrunner Emerald Fennell in her feature film directorial debut.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mulligan will play Cassie, a young woman haunted by a tragedy in her past who takes a particular type of revenge on predatory men who cross her path. Fennell also is penning the screenplay.

Production is set to begin in spring.

Mulligan’s onscreen credits include celebrated turns in “Wildlife,” “Suffragette,” “Drive” and her Oscar-nominated performance in “An Education.”

Fennell plays Camilla Parker Bowles in the upcoming fourth season of Netflix’s “The Crown” and is a showrunner for the second season of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s acclaimed spy series “Killing Eve.”

Fennell will produce along with Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara for LuckyChap Entertainment and Ben Browning for FilmNation Entertainment. Ashley Fox of FilmNation Entertainment will executive produce, according to Variety.

Focus Features will distribute the film worldwide, excluding Australia, New Zealand, Benelux, Israel, Greece, Middle East, CIS, and South Africa.

“Emerald generated an incredible script that rocked us to our core, so we’ve no doubt she’ll bring that same energy when directing this story,” said Focus chairman Peter Kujawski, per Variety. “We are thrilled to work once again with Carey along with Emerald, Glen and the entire filmmaking team on bringing this exhilarating dark tale to screen.”
