Grammy-nominated R&B recording artist Ledisi will again portray legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson in the planned biopic “Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story,” Deadline reports.

Ledisi previously played Jackson in the Oscar-winning 2014 fact-based film “Selma,” director Ava DuVernay’s chronicle of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s iconic 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

Columbus Short (ABC’s “Scandal,” “Stomp the Yard”) will play MLK, who was a close friend of Jackson’s, in “Remember Me.” Janet Hubert (“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”) and Wendy Raquel Robinson (“The Walking Dead,” “The Steve Harvey Show”) also will co-star in the biopic.

Named after one of Jackson’s signature songs, “Remember Me” will be set during the tempestuous years between 1956 and 1963, and it chronicle the Queen of Gospel’s friendship with King and her often overlooked contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. She was a key inspiration of MLK’s iconic “I Have A Dream” speech and often accompanied King to perform at his events.

“I am honored to be given a chance to paint the world through Mahalia’s eyes and sing her songs,” said Ledisi, per Deadline. “Watching Columbus Short transform into Dr. Martin Luther King has been inspiring. I am sharing space with so many amazing actors and with Ericka Nicole Malone’s words and being under the direction of the Great Denise Dowse’s I am thrilled to be telling the story of New Orleans Gospel Legend Mahalia Jackson.”

Denise Dowse is directing the memoir. Ericka Nicole Malone wrote the”Remember Me” script and serves as an executive producer with Phillip Robinson. Vince Allen is producing, according to Deadline.

With a career that has spanned over two decades, Ledisi has received 12 Grammy nominations, earned three Soul Train Music Awards, one NAACP Theater Award and six NAACP Image awards. Also a published author, Ledisi released her latest album, “The Wild Card,” last fall via BMG.

Along with portraying Jackson, Ledisi recently played Patti LaBelle on BET’s series “American Soul.” Her additional acting credits include the films “Leatherheads,” “Leave It on the Floor” and the upcoming film “B-Boy Blues.”
