Primetime Emmy Award-winning performer Kerry Washington (“Scandal,” “Little Fires Everywhere,” “Django Unchained”) will star in and produce a feature film adaptation of Diane Cardwell’s memoir “Rockaway” for Netflix.

The project will continue Washington’s  burgeoning relationship with Netflix: She previously appeared in the musical adaptation “The Prom” and the drama “American Son” for the streamer, and she stars in the upcoming Netflix film “The School For Good And Evil.”

The film adaptation of “Rockaway” is a co-production with Liza Chasin’s 3dot Productions, Washington’s Simpson Street and Aevitas Entertainment, according to a news release.

Chasin, who has a multi-year first-look deal with Netflix, will produce for 3dot Productions; Washington and Pilar Savone for Simpson Street; and Todd Shuster for Aevitas Entertainment.

Cardwell and Margaret Chernin are executive producers.

NAACP Image Award winner Nichelle Tramble Spellman (“Truth Be Told”) will adapt the screenplay based on the memoir by Cardwell.

Published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, “Rockaway” was named by Outside Magazine as one of the best adventure travel books of the year.

It centers on a Manhattan journalist on a routine assignment who unexpectedly discovers the transcendent power of surfing. She finds herself running from the comfortable life she’s always known towards a life of romance and self-discovery in eclectic Rockaway Beach.
