Victoria Mahoney is directing the sequel to Netflix’s 2020 hit action film “The Old Guard.”

Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo and Chiwetel Ejiofor are anticipated to return for the sequel, according to a news release.

Mahoney will take the helm of the follow-up from Gina Prince-Bythewood, who broke Netflix records with “The Old Guard.”

“I love ‘The Old Guard’ and the story and characters I was honored to put into the world. It was exciting to disrupt the genre. I have decided not to direct the sequel, but will stay on as a producer. I leave our franchise in good hands as my girl Vic Mahoney takes on this next chapter,” Prince-Bythewood said in a statement.

“The Old Guard,” adapted from the comic book series by author Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández, centers on a covert team of immortal mercenaries who are suddenly exposed and must fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered.

Rucka returns as screenwriter and executive producer for the sequel.

Along with Prince-Bythewood, producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger for Skydance; Theron, Beth Kono and AJ Dix for Denver and Delilah; and Marc Evans for Marc Evans Productions.

“Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill and savvy that went into carving ‘The Old Guard,'” Mahoney said in a statement. “I must’ve watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement – being invited on ‘The Old Guard’ journey alongside ferocious badasses. Ever eager to continue pushing the genre for action-loving audiences.”

Recently, Mahoney served as second unit director on J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode IX -The Rise of Skywalker,” making her the first woman and first Black woman to direct a “Star Wars” film.

She also has helmed episodes of the television series “Lovecraft Country,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Queen Sugar” and more.

“The Old Guard” is one of Netflix’s most popular films to date and was seen by 78 million households in its first four weeks, according to the news release.

A co-production of Netflix and Skydance, it also earned critical acclaim, garnering an 81 percent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Prince-Bythewood ( “Love & Basketball,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” “Beyond the Lights”) became the first Black woman to direct a Hollywood comic-book-themed movie with “The Old Guard.” Plus, Terilyn A. Shropshire (“Eve’s Bayou”), who has collaborated with the helmer since 2000’s “Love & Basketball,” became the first Black woman to edit one.

It also boasted a post-production team comprised of about 85% women, which Prince-Bythewood told The Hollywood Reporter “doesn’t happen, or very rarely happens on any movie, but on an action film, I guarantee you that’s never happened before.”

Theron told Variety over the summer that filming is slated to begin on “The Old Guard” sequel in the first quarter of 2022.
