Academy Award and Primetime Emmy winner Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk,” HBO’s “Watchmen”) will portray trailblazer Shirley Chisholm in the upcoming biopic “Chisholm.”

Written and directed by John Ridley (“Needle in a Timestack”), “Shirley,” initially announced in early 2021, has landed at Netflix.

Producers are King and her sister, Reina King, for Royal Ties Productions; Anikah McLaren and Elizabeth Haggard for Participant; and Ridley (“Guerrilla,” “Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992”).

Executive producers are Jeff Skoll and Ted Gidlow, according to a news release.

“Shirley” is billed as the intimate portrayal of trailblazing political icon Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman to serve in the U.S. Congress and to run for U.S. president, and the cost of her accomplishments for Chisholm herself. Based on exclusive and extensive conversations with family, friends and those who knew her best, the film will tell the story of Chisholm’s boundary-breaking and historic 1972 presidential campaign.

Along with Regina King  – reuniting with Netflix after starring in the streaming service’s Western “The Harder They Fall” – “Shirley” will star Lance Reddick (“John Wick 1-4”), Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges (“Manchester by the Sea”), Christina Jackson (“Swagger”), Michael Cherrie (“Home Again”), Dorian Missick (“For Life”), Amirah Vann (“Underground”), W. Earl Brown (“Deadwood”), with André Holland (“Passing”) and Oscar nominee Terrence Howard (“Empire”).

Participant will be focusing its impact work tied to Shirley around the company’s ongoing dedication to advancing civic engagement and social justice.

Chisholm died Jan. 1, 2005, at the age of 80, and she was posthumously awarded the distinguished Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.

Regina King posted on Twitter that she had begun filming on the project on Nov. 30, which would have been Chisholm’s 97th birthday.
