Angela Bassett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Cate Blanchett and more to receive tributes at Santa Barbara film fest

Jamie Lee Curtis, Angela Bassett, Cate Blanchett and Brendan Fraser will be honored with tributes at the 2023 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

In addition, the festival’s Virtuosos Awards will be bestowed on Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”), Nina Hoss (“Tár”), Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”), Jeremy Pope (“The Inspection”), Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”) and Jeremy Strong (“Armageddon Time”).

Curtis, who just received AARP The Magazine’s 2022 Movies for Grownups Career Achievement Award in conjunction with her acclaimed turn in the mind-bending “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” will be honored with this year’s Modern Master Award, the highest honor presented by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Established in 1995, it was created to honor an individual who has enriched our culture through accomplishments in the motion picture industry. The award was re-named the Maltin Modern Master Award in 2015 in honor of long-time SBIFF moderator and renowned film critic Leonard Maltin.

Bassett will receive the festival’s Montecito Award, given to a person in the entertainment industry who has made a great contribution to film. With her powerhouse supporting turn as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” she just became the first performer to earn an Golden Globe acting nomination for a film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Blanchett, who earned the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her scorching turn in “Tár,” has been named the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Outstanding Performer of the Year Award recipient. Given to the best performance of the year, this tribute was created to honor the actor whose role in a film has exceeded greatness.

The recipient of the Toronto International Film Festival Tribute Award for his acclaimed turn in “The Whale,” Fraser has been selected for the American Riviera Award, the Santa Barbara fest’s prize for outstanding achievement in American film.

The Virtuosos Award is designed to be given to multiple up-and-coming actors for achieving a breakthrough performance.
