Vertical has acquired U.S. rights to Catherine Hardwicke’s (Twilight,” “Thirteen”) film “Prisoner’s Daughter,” which made its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival in Canada.

With a screenplay penned by Mark Bacci (“Black Box”), the film is described as a gritty, emotionally turbulent thriller that follows a father recently released from prison who seeks to reconnect with his estranged daughter and the grandson he’s never known, according to a news release.

The film stars SAG, Critics’ Choice and Gotham Award-nominated Kate Beckinsale (“Love & Friendship,” the “Underworld” franchise), Golden Globe winner and Emmy-nominated performer Brian Cox (“Succession”), musician and Oklahoma native Tyson Ritter of All-American Rejects, Christopher Convery (“Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game”), Ernie Hudson (“Ghostbusters”) and Jon Huertas (“This Is Us”).

The film is slated for a theatrical release on June 30.

After 12 years in prison, Max (Cox) is diagnosed with terminal cancer and granted a compassionate release with the condition he reside with his daughter, Maxine (Beckinsale).  With no love lost for Max but financially strapped and working multiple jobs to raise her only son, Ezra (Convery), she begrudgingly agrees to the conditions. As Max seeks one last chance to redeem himself in her eyes, they must contend with his violent past as it comes back to haunt them all.

“Brian and Kate deliver powerful performances that embody the tangled emotions and hidden agendas of their characters. Under Catherine Hardwicke’s direction, ‘Prisoner’s Daughter’ unravels in a poignant, masterful story of the father-daughter bonds, and how easily they can be broken but perhaps not beyond repair,” Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey said in a statement.

The film is produced by Marina Grasic of Oakhurst Entertainment, David Haring (“Bill & Ted Face the Music”) and Sam Okun, with executive producers Mark Bacci, Wen-Chia Chang, Jason Duan, Capstone’s Christian Mercuri and Ruzanna Kegeyan, Jai Khanna, Robert E. Morgan, Guy Moshe, Chris Rasmussen, Jim Reeve, and Crystine Zhang.

Noah Greenberg is the film’s cinematographer, and the composers are Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum and Stephen Light.

Jarowey and Senior Vice President of Acquisitions Tony Piantedosi negotiated the deal on behalf of Vertical; UTA Independent Film Group and Capstone Pictures negotiated the deal on behalf of the production.
