With her first film, The Power of Hope, 14-year-old filmmaker Kalia Love Jones becomes the youngest director to qualify for Academy Award consideration via her animated short’s selection by the Pan African Film and Arts Festival and several other Oscar-qualifying festivals. Love Jones attributes her inspiration specifically to Michele Obama, and she want to inspire others with the hopeful message in her film.

That Becoming is a so-called “authorized project” from the Obamas’ Higher Ground production company does not dilute its significance or its intimacy as director Nadia Hallgren follows Obama on tour, slips in vintage newsreels, and interviews Obama’s daughters. Michelle Obama’s husband also appears on camera — with a smile.

Netflix dropping a surprise documentary about sweet ’n’ salty former First Lady Michelle Obama right now feels like an attack and a blessing at the same time. An attack because it’s a smack in the face, a stunning reminder of a better time in America, four long years ago. And a blessing because, well: same.
