The era of DC Comics heroes dominating the box-office is officially over! Supergirl is a colossal disappointment. Briefly introduced in the epilogue of Superman (2025), Kal-El’s punky young cousin, Kara Zor-El is also a survivor from the doomed planet Krypton. But, unlike Clark Kent, Kara still remembers the language and culture of her home world since her parents raised her on an outpost known as the floating city of Argo – until that too was destroyed – so young Kara was placed in a pod and shipped off to Earth with her beloved dog Krypto.

Dame Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut, My Mother’s Wedding, will open in theaters August 8, almost two years after it had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
Inspired by her own family history, Scott Thomas co-wrote the film with her husband, John Micklethwait. She also co-stars.

Dame Kristin Scott Thomas makes her feature directorial debut with My Mother’s Wedding (formerly titled North Star), a family tale about love and loss with a great cast. A lesser cast and better writing would have improved matters, but never mind. The plot revolves around the reunion of three sisters who are gathering at the family home for their mother’s third marriage. Mom (Scott Thomas) has been twice married and twice widowed, a detail from Scott Thomas’ own life. As a child, the filmmaker lost her father and her stepfather — both armed forces pilots — within six years.

When a trusted friend recommended the supernatural Netflix sci-fi series 1899, he urged me to see it quick – because – despite audience enthusiasm and positive reviews – it’s been cancelled. So I did – joining legions of bewildered viewers, wondering why there won’t be a second season for this spooky, genre-juggling maritime mystery? Was it a tax-write off? Forbes concluded: “Netflix is becoming a graveyard stacked with dead series and unfinished conclusions.”
